Growing up was always interesting. I was too white to be Asian, and too Asian to be white. Being raised in a predominantly all white community my parents did the best they could to keep me connected to my Asian roots, but they did so through dance. It wasn’t until I entered the kitchen that I saw how I could truly reconnect with who I am.
This recipe is a hybrid of who I was and who I’ve become, an “Asianized” American dish so to say. My parents made french toast for me and my brother on special occasions, or especially if we had a stale loaf of bread laying around. So I wanted to take a dish that was near and dear to my heart and personalize it even more for you all.
Being a part of this Rooted Fare campaign has reminded me that no matter where you are in life, or how far you’ve strayed from your roots, it is never too late to find them again, and that there is ALWAYS a way to enjoy your culture.
Black Sesame Crunchy Butter French Toast
Prep: 10 min
Cook: 5 min
- Bread, preferably thick sliced
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp Black Sesame Crunchy Butter
- Salt to taste
- 1/4 cup fresh mango, diced
- 1 tsp chili flakes
- Butter (as needed for pan)
- In a bowl, whisk eggs, milk, vanilla extract, Black Sesame Crunchy Butter, and salt
- Dip bread into batter. On medium-low heat, add butter into pan and cook the toast until golden brown on both sides
- Slather more Black Sesame Crunchy Butter, and finish with fresh juicy diced mango and chili flakes. Enjoy!
