Learn how to make vegan mooncakes (or yuèbĭng 月饼), an iconic sweet delicacy eaten during Mid-Autumn Festival to celebrate the year's harvest and gather with family!
Get hands-on in this fun and intimate class taught by Jennifer Yee, owner and baker of Bakers Bench, located in Chinatown. Born and raised in San Gabriel Valley, Jennifer has worked at multiple Michelin-starred kitchens across the country (The French Laundry, Jean-Georges, Gilt and more) and led the pastry program at Konbi before opening Bakers Bench, known for phenomenal vegan pastries. This year, we'll be hosting our 3rd annual class in the shaded garden behind her beautiful brick-and-mortar space in Chinatown.
Class Flow: After a brief introduction and discussion about Mid-Autumn Festival and mooncakes, you'll master making mooncakes with a golden, crumbly crust with a black sesame almond filling. Throughout the class, you'll get expert tips on how to perfect the dough and fold in the black sesame filling. After the class, you'll have the option to stick around for an hour for us to bake your mooncakes or pack them to-go and bake at home. Coffee, tea, and small snacks will be served afterwards for you to mingle with your classmates!
You'll have the chance to shop our "marketplace" of goodies from Rooted Fare and ready-to-eat pastries from Bakers Bench and contribute to the senior mooncake "fund" to serve seniors in Chinatown homemade mooncakes.
We'll provide everything, so just bring yourself and your curiosity!

We had a wonderful time learning to make mooncakes at the workshop. The organizers set things up so well that all we had to do was follow their instructions (easy ones!) and we had authentic-looking and tasting mooncakes, Highly recommend!

Great class! Fun, very well coordinated and the setting at Bakers Bench is darling! They give you an option to have them bake the moon cakes for you, which we then walked over to Chinatown , 15 min walk, to grab a delicious lunch and came back to grab a dessert moon cakes. Lovely day and loved supporting local women entrepreneurs.

I had a blast meeting Hedy and Ashley of Rooted Fare, Jen (Baker’s Bench), and some of the other attendees of this mooncake making class! The class was set up in the beautiful outdoor garden behind the bakery, and Jen was a fantastic instructor who led us through the steps of making our own mooncakes. Hedy and Ashley were so kind and supportive, making sure we had everything we needed. I loved the fun and relaxed energy of the class, while participating in this time old tradition of celebrating the mid-autumn festival via mooncakes. The black sesame filling from Rooted Fare, along with some crushed almonds made these mooncakes so delicious- not too sweet and very flavorful. I highly recommend this class to anyone who loves mooncakes or wants to try something fun and new!
